Could someone please explain to me what a self service point of sale checkout is whithin a supermarket?

The ones where there is no checkout person, and where you do everything yourself with touch screens and stuff like that. Please go into technical detail as I am trying to explain this in I.T. Thank You

1. Simple. Compare it to an ATM machine versus a bank teller. ATMs and any self service POS (pay at the pump or Wal-Mart check out) are designed to cut costs for the service provider. It will have minimal variable cost and allow staff to concentrate on customers/clients who require value added services. The customers/clients get added convience.
