Help with USB port?

i don't think mine is working, i'm trying to hook up a new printer, im on a laptop and its not working! its driving me CRAZY! if you know how to fix it please help! its a POS toshiba.

  1. Please answer these questions yourself.... 1. Did you install the driver for the printer to work. 2. Are you connections perfect. 3. Check for new hardware in the windows. Note : when ever a new hardware is plugged in , windows pop ups with a new message stating that " NEW HARDWARE FOUND ".
  2. If your computer has an AMD CPU, and Viatech USB Host Controllers; changing the USB Host Controller drivers to standard or generic drivers, may work.
  3. if you can plug other things into the port and have them function, then check these things: 1. is the cable for the printer securely connected in both locations? 2. is the cable noticeably damaged? 3. Is the printer on when you plug it into the computer? 4. Do you have the correct driver for the printer? (The computer may quickly say "cannot install device" and then leave you to figure it out on your own.)
  4. Check the Usb Root Hub Properties in the Device Manager. There is a Power Management Tab and a box to uncheck that allows Windows XP to turn off USB Ports to save power.
