Programming a Receipt Printer using vb .net or java -- possible?

I want to program a receipt printer that will be used in our store. It comes cheaper compared to buying a POS system. I still haven't bought a receipt printer. I think receipt printers come with their own software to run it. So my main problem is their programmability -- can i use vb or java to control the printer?

2. You probably can use java to control the printer, but i think you would get better control from C/C++. I guess it all really depends on what printer you get and what API's the manufacturer makes available to you.
