It really works similar to an dot matrix printer except instead of pins driven into ribbon, a set of tiny heating elements heats up the paper as it is coming by. The print paper is heat sensitive and darkens as it is heated. Unfortunately the elements tend to burn out other time and cannot be repaired. The head or whole printer has to be replaced.
