Building my own drivers to use a piece of equipment on my computer?

I recently bought an HP POS printer as seen in here: (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF05a/12454-12454-359465-338958-359467-339692.html) The printer works using power usb, and I was able to connect the printer to my pc using a powerusb device. Sadly the driver sincluded only identify the printer as an USB device, not as a printer to use in Windows. I was looking at making my own set of drivers to use in Windows XP. I know visual basic and C++. I have never attempted to program a driver but maybe I can teach myself if I have some sort of tutorial. Can anyone offer me some guidance?
