Can I connect a thermal receipt printer to my PC (USB), then print Word templates? Or do I need POS software?

Can I connect a thermal receipt printer to my PC via USB (assuming it has USB compatibility), then print Microsoft Word templates? Or do I need quickbooks or something equivalent?

1. You can print from word, you just need to set up a custom page layout so that you format will look okay.l
