What are super-thin ribbon cables referred to?

I see these a lot when working inside CD drives, scanners and printers. They seem to be prevalent when there is going to be a lot of bending back and forth. They are a fraction of an inch thick, but can be any number of wire wide. What are these called, and where can I find a selection of breakout boards based on connectors for various types of these ribbons?

  1. A ribbon cable is also known as multi-wire planar cable. I have done some work in the industrial engineering field and have seen countless ribbon cables in all shapes and sizes depending on the specific application. BELDEN is a pretty wicked source for any kind of cable under the sun and they are top notch quality. here's the link: http://www.belden.com/index.cfm
