What are the benefits of dot matrix printers that makes them more useful to students than other printers?

- Do dot matrix printers still exist? I would have thought they have all gone to the scrap heap, except for the odd one in a museum. They were very cheap to run as they used a ribbon instead of any kind of ink cartridge. But the quality was really poor compared to ink jets ot lasers.
- Well said, Steve! There isn't a benefit of dot matrix over ink jet printers, and if you're talking students, here, I would recommend an all-in-one, so the student can scan his or her documents, something a dot matrix cannot do.
- The ribbons for a dot matrix printer are ridiculously cheap. The benefit would be the running cost. (actually dot matrix printers are still widely used as form printers as you can very precisely align a page on a dot matrix)
