How to pick out a POS system?

I want to invest in a POS system, but im not sure how to come about it. All the merchandise wont have any barcodes, so I think I would have to get barcode software and printer as well...right? Would I have to install the barcode software in the POS system? Is it a hard process...UGH seems sooo complicated!
