help with Brother ax-10 typewriter?

My typewriter seems to be stuck in the erase position, and/or change ink cartridge position. when I bought it there was no ink ribbon cartridge insalled. It was in up position and I installed a ink ribbon cartridge but can not lower it. Is there a code for lowering the cartridge to the typing position? Is it supposed to lower on its own when I close the top cover?Or is something else wrong? I didn't receive a manual when I bought it and if someone knows the code system it would be very helpful. Thanks!

1. Your best bet will be to take it to someone that can repair it for you. They will like to see it in person more than likely. Go to a place that sells the ribbons, or google typewriters or something. I hope you get it fixed.
