I have brother fax-827, says ribbon is empty, do i need to replace the whole cartridge or just the refill?

1. i have found that brother faxes are garbage. they are seldom not in sleep mode and take forever to fax. they also have poor customer support. most do not speak english. the last rep i got was really creepy and actually yelled at me.
